Why and How to clean your AC

on Feb 22, 2021

Air conditioners nowadays add so much to your home, a room is not complete if you don’t have an AC on to keep things cool or make the room-temperature set to your preference. In this blog we will be discussing why and how should you keep your AC clean; first off, let’s tackle the Why first, here are two reason:

Improved Air Conditioner Efficiency
Cleaning your air conditioner allows it to perform better by reducing the stress and pressure that dust and debris build-up usually put on your unit. When air filters get clogged and become dirty, the normal flow of air is impeded thus making your unit work harder than it should.

Better Indoor Air Quality
Your air conditioning unit does more than just cooling your home; it also helps in keeping the air circulation inside your home clean and healthy. A dirty unit provides a suitable breeding ground for mold, fungi, bacteria and germs to thrive. In effect, whenever you turn on your unit, these particles get blown into the room and contaminate the air, exposing you and your family to a variety of respiratory infection and trigger asthma attacks.

How?

• Vacuum the AC Filter
For regular maintenance, vacuuming is all you need to do. Use an attachment without a brush, as that may damage the filter. Run the vacuum nozzle up and down the length of the filter. You will likely see quite a bit of dust removed. If you have pets, you may have to go over the filter a few extra times to get out as much hair as possible. Don’t push too hard on the filter as you vacuum, or you may end up tearing or denting it.

•  Soak the AC Filter
Fill up a large container with room-temperature water. Add a little bit of regular liquid detergent and mix it well, so the water lathers up. Place the filter in the container and make sure it’s submerged. Move the filter back and forth, so it’s fully covered in the soapy solution, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

Don’t use brushes or other abrasive tools on the filter, as they may cause damage. Using a hose is a good way to remove dirt and debris. Hose off one side at a time until the water runs clean. .

• Spray the AC Filter
Mix up a one-to-one solution of vinegar and water and add it to a spray bottle. Spray both sides of the filter and give it 10 minutes for the solution to kill bacteria. Rinse the filter under running water before continuing.

• Dry the AC Filter
AC filters need to air dry, and it can take several hours to become completely free of moisture. To aid in the process, you can put newspapers on the ground underneath the filter. Lean the filter up against the wall on top of the newspapers. Once at least three hours have passed, you can re-install the filter in your air conditioning unit.
